Fashion is a widespread language understood by people all over the world. It is a form of art that brings people together. It celebrates the beauty, each person’s individuality, and creativity. Clothing can be attractive at any price. What is important is how you wear a garment.
Fashion comes to your help, puts emphasis on your qualities and hides the “flaws”. Making sure you wear what you should and what characterizes your personality will boost your self – esteem and confidence. This is what fashion is all about.
But, how do you get there? What clothes should you choose to buy? The couture designer labels or the fast fashion ones?
What do couture designer labels mean?
For those that are new in this business or those that do not spend so much time in getting to know the fashion insights and demands, to be a couturier designer label takes a lot of effort and money. A couture designer follows strict guidelines that are monitored by Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie de Paris; he has a Paris based atelier and when it comes to the budget, Sky is the limit.
Thus, they are the crème de la crème from the fashion industry and the most respected ones.
Do designer clothes make a hole in your pocket?
For the middle-class people, they tend to do when you expect to buy the same quantity as when buying fast fashion clothing. However, there are those designer labels more affordable collections and then there are also those sales periods when you can buy them at a better price.
This brings us to our next question:
Are designer clothes an investment?
For sure they are. Even though they do go out of fashion just like any other garment, they worth much more and hold their value for longer than any fast fashion store. This is due to the name, to the quality and to the fact that they are found in small quantities and henceforth = an investment.
Do designer clothes really last longer?
Yes, they do and this is because of the good material quality they have.
Does this mean that you have to spend a lot of money in order to be fashionable?
You can be fashionable without spending too much money and make wise choices with your fashion style. It is important to be conscious while trying to stay fashionable. The fashion industry, especially the fast fashion part is more affordable due to the fact that they do not really care about the environment.
Anyhow, lately each fast fashion chain has a sustainable collection. So choosing from it is a wise choice you can make while staying on budget as well. I think this would say a lot about your sense of fashion, may it be a couture designer label or not.
What does fast fashion clothing mean?
Fast fashion clothing collections are based on the most recent fashion trends presented at Fashion Week. Emphasis is put on the optimization of the supply chain that makes these clothes to be able to be produced quickly and inexpensively. This is a big part of why they cost little which adds to the others – the materials used, the working environment, the workforce and the wages etc.
Anyhow, this does not mean that you cannot look at your best wearing the fast fashion clothing. You can easily revamp the wardrobe for little money with the high street fashion items. But be aware that as the quality is lower you may end up spending more money on buying garments constantly.
Do they tear up so fast?
That depends a lot on how much you use the garment if you respect the washing instructions and the choice of garment you made. Some are of a really poor quality while some can be of a better quality and last longer. “You get what you pay for” and this is a true fact.
Will you contribute to damaging the environment?
Unfortunately yes. But there is an answer to this as the fast fashion retailers try and have some organic collections in each season and you can make wise choices. These are garments made from organic cotton, made with are for fiber and in a more sustainable environment.
To find it easier to compare the both, take a look at the below infographic.
What are the options?
Of course, they depend a lot on your budget and lifestyle.
Once you love fashion and clothing is hard to change but it is easier to change your clothing shopping habits. It will not happen overnight but in time you will see your curated wardrobe looks better, higher quality and you will feel better about being self-conscious with fashion. I am not saying do not buy from fast fashion stores anymore like Zara, H&M, Mango, but try and select the organic clothes and the self-conscious collections from these shops.
While I for one try and stay fashion conscious and buy as many organic clothes as possible from fast fashion retailers, I have also turned in the past few years to the local designers.
They are more expensive than what the street fashion offers but less expensive than the couture designer labels. A good reason I turned to them for is that their material quality is higher than the rest of affordable clothing, they think about the industry and sustain it by offering employment to people in their own country and they care for fiber, which is a great deal for me. And it has been proved that those clothes that are not mass made but only a few pieces a model have better sewing, better attention to detail and by far last longer. I for one love the idea of having an item in my wardrobe that is in a limited production.
Do not think for a second that for me is about the designer and the brand. It is not, for sure. But, it is about the quality of the material, the production environment and all these things that do not look that good in the fast fashion industry.
You can look fabulous in both couture designer clothing and fast fashion clothing. It is you that counts and what you convey through those clothing.
Do I wish I had more designer labels clothes? For sure as I know they are made with care and a good quality production system is in place; which is a plus for the environment we live in.
Would I cease to buy fast fashion clothes if I had enough money to dress only from couture designers? That is a definite no-no! Even celebrities have these brands in their wardrobe. And why wouldn’t I? Choosing to buy consciously from these shops, to care for fiber and respecting the environment, is the answer.
I do not agree with those that choose to talk bad about people that like only couture designer clothing. If they have the financial possibilities to do so it is wonderful for them. I don’t agree either with those that choose to talk bad people that do not have any designer label in their wardrobe. Not having couture designer clothing in your wardrobe does not mean you lack a sense of fashion.
It is important to know how to choose what to wear, feel that garment and give it a personality. Fashion is a choice, and this is the beauty part of it so let’s try and make it something we are proud of and wear our clothes with pride.
What are your thoughts on this? Do you have any more pros and cons for designer labels vs fast fashion?
