On May 7, 2018, in New York at the Met Museum the most important event of the annual fashion calendar took place – the Met Gala.
This year the dress code was inspired by the Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination theme. This theme and the exposition the theme comes along with; explores the dialogue and the connection between Catholicism and fashion. The exposition is opened starting today May 10, 2018.
On the invitation regarding the dress code it was added “Sunday Best” maybe to temper those that had a wild imagination and those that use to appear with little clothes on the red carpet. This theme does not mean too much flesh, out of the contrary as we will be able to see.
While we expected a big night, this was the most beautiful and successful Met Gala ever. Everything was more sumptuous than we could have imagined; thus proving that fashion knows no limits. As the theme itself states, you can imagine there were lot of religious imagery, many headpieces and a lot of crosses. What you did not imagine was the use of colors in such an original way – some were really attentive to the Vatican colors and chose an exact Vatican yellow for their dresses, some the dark red. However let’s see the most beautiful gowns that caught our eyes.
What did celebrities wear at the Met gala?
Let us start with the co-chairs.
Anna Wintour remained faithful to the theme and came dressed as “Cardinal Chanel”. The US Vogue’s editor-in-chief and co-chair of the Met Gala stunned in a Chanel dress accessorized with a diamond rosary. The cream gown and the cut out neck gave her that Angelique figure we were all expecting she will have.
Donatella Versace wearing of course a Versace creation that looked flawless on her. She showed a little bit of skin with that mini dress she was wearing but had a glamorous long dress wrapped around her waist. The embroidered mini dress was a work of art and fitted her perfectly.
Rihanna and with this we have said it all. Along the years she has used us to being one of the red carpet icons at the Met gala and this year she did not disappoint either. She opted for the papal style with the custom designed Maison Margiela dress. She absolutely left us speechless, looking fresh and interesting in her pope style outfit. Again short in the front and long at the back.
Amal Clooney, the beautiful wife of George Clooney opted to wear a young British designer – Richard Quinn. Though not so heavenly she aced it and looked perfect as always.
Moving on, we can admire the beautiful Jennifer Lopez. She left us admire her dramatic train and beautifully embellished dress. A very pronounced crucifix was on her Balmain dress, a perfect thigh revealing slit and perfect hair. She is sure to go down in Met gala history masterpiece. This is my favorite Met gala look 😊
Gigi Hadid is another great view of the Met Gala. She wore a gold and blue stain glass dress that had the effect of like just being painted on her body. With this Donatella Versace gown she was the Belle of the ball.
Who is better to adapt the religious iconography than the well known Madonna? Arriving with Jean Paul Gaultier, she looked gorgeous on the red carpet adopting this religious theme.
Rita Ora is another attendee that adopted the religious theme. While her sweeping Prada lace gown was black she accessorized it with black sparkling gloves, black floral headpiece and a small yellow little bag.
Katy Perry made a stunning appearance with her angel wings. Literally they were giant and caught all the attention once she went on the red carpet. This was not a last minute decision for sure, as hundreds of hours took to make those giant angel wings. Gold all over, the Versace mini dressed fitted her perfectly. It was paired with a thigh-high boots.
Going on the dark side, Lily Collins opted for a sheer Givenchy gown and Gothic make up. Her hair was up keeping it simple and interesting. She accessorized with a dark colored headpiece and a rosary in her hand.
Cardi B had her Met Gala debut wearing an angelic style dress, signed Moschino. The look was completed with a jeweled headpiece. She looked amazing celebrating her pregnancy.
Ariana Grande came at her first Met gala and wore Vera Wang. Her dress was all covered by the Sistine Chapel drawings, representing the Michelangelo’s iconic fresco, The Last Judgement.
Blake Lively was astonishing in her custom made Versace dress, full with regal embroidery, a bejeweled bodice and a full skirt. At least 600 hours to make this dress and she came to the Met with an actual bus for the dress to fit in. She accessorized with over $2 million worth of Lorraine Schwartz jewelry. This is the most royalish of her appearance at the Met ever.
Right on the theme, Selena Gomez goes dripping in diamonds wearing Coach. Her dress had her favourite Bible quote embroidered on it and she took the inspiration for the dress from Queen Esther in the Bible. She looked angelic.
Lily Aldridge went for the yellow color of Vatican keeping it simple in a long dress, designed by Ralph Lauren. She had a long train that made her dress even more fabulous. With a big cleavage she added some Bulgari jewelry and Jimmy Choo clutch and shoes.
Her long-time friend, Rosie Huntington Whiteley wore the same designer and added a cape with multi coloured Swarovski crystals. Everything was perfectly out together for the star as always.
Kerry Washington looked amazing, dripping in a Ralph Lauren liquid gold dress. Her hair was stunning having a natural afro hair look.
Sarah Jessica Parker, a sucker for themed Met Galas she always delivers. She wore a Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda dress with gold baroque embellishments and sacred hearts on the gown. Her headpiece represented the nativity scene, still on gold theme.
Anne Hathaway, an icon on the red carpet, stunned in a red Valentino dress. The dress had interesting details and big ruffles that only she could wear. The back had a beautiful deep cut and the hair looked flawless, as always.
Still in the red department was Amber Heard that wore a beautiful Carolina Herrera dress. She added a gold halo headpiece.
Wearing Prada, Amanda Seyfried, chose the Vatican yellow color. The dress fitted her angelic way, creating a pretty soft look.
While we did not expect that, Scarlet Johansson pushed it on the red carpet wearing a Marchesa blood red color soft dress, that kind of sent her closer to God.
Emma Stone looked amazing in a Vuitton chic and navy with gold embellishments dress.
Kate Bosworth as always was stunning in a Oscar de la Renta dress. She made it big all the way. With her gold dress she blended unto the background. The gothic romantic look with that wonderful veil on her head, makes it a look worth coming back to.
Nicky Minaj stunned wearing bright red on the red carpet. She wore a devilishly red Oscar de la Renta gown. She was just slaying it with that circular piece all around her face.
Hailey Baldwin had an angelic look in the Tommy Hilfiger dress. The dress had a nice flowing train.
All angelic like was also Winnie Harlow, who turned to Tommy Hilfiger as well for her strapless dress. She added an interesting headpiece to her look made of flowers, pearls, lace and star-studded spikes. She always stays true to herself and this is what we like about her.
The Victoria Secret Angel, Stella Maxwell had a divine look, having images of Virgin Mary all over her Moschino gown.
These were some of the most exciting and beautiful appearances from the Met Gala Heavenly Bodies event of the year. This theme helped stars see that there are different ways of being sexy and beautiful.
The most present dress designers on the red carpet were:
- Dolce & Gabbana
- Oscar de la Renta
- Louis Vuitton
- Maison Margiela
- Tommy Hilfiger
- Vera Wang
- Ralph Lauren
While we expected a lot of reds on the red carpet, this was not the case. There was a lot of gold, black, navy and whites.
Having looked at the event while people were arriving at the Met Gala I could notice two big trends, the cleavage or leg. Moreover, there were a lot of short in front and long at the back dresses. We expected a lot of tails but not so many.
The abundance of the headpieces worn on the red carpet was the peak of the evening. They came in all shape, sizes and colors fitting all personalities and styles.
